Both the LED and the sensor have been significantly improved, and SpO2 (oxygen saturation) and PR (pulse rate) can be measured with extremely high accuracy even at low blood perfusion. How does a plethysmograph work?
Each waveform (see above) corresponds to the heart beat, and the amplitude of the waveform corresponds to the amount of blood flowing through the blood vessel.
