Program Description: Stars and Guitars (60 min) Explore the wonders of the Hawaiian night sky to guitar music in this evening astronomy program! Planetarium Director and classical guitarist Mike Shanahan provides a tour of the current evening skies over the islands, and plays live classical guitar interludes during the show, from Bach to Brazil. We also explore upcoming astronomical events for the month and end the show with fun special effects, from a flight through Saturn's rings to  ride on the space roller coaster.  After the program ends at 9 p.m., the Bishop Museum's observatory opens up, to explore the real night sky with  a 12.5 inch diameter telescope  Please note that the telescope viewing is weather dependent; the planetarium show happens come rain or (moon) shine.  Focus for June 18 2016 show: the last chance till December to see the Southern Cross from the Hawaiian Islands; Jupiter, Saturn and Mars continue to blaze in the evening sky; summertime and the overhead sun in the islands.  Guitar music: music of Spain.  Tickets purchased are non-refundable. This is a different show from our daily "Sky Tonight" shows, which do not require reservations. Click here to see a schedule of our daily planetarium programs. Show length is 1 hour. There is no late seating. Please arrive by 7:45 p.m. We have no restriction on children of any age, but do ask parents to consider whether their child can sit through an hour-long planetarium program. If you do bring a young child, please be considerate of others and exit the theater if they are crying or restless. We keep the planetarium fairly cool due to the needs of our star system, so it is a good idea to bring a light sweater.
