The CFO and Chief Risk Officer's "Handbook" outlines a practical but theoretically sound framework for helping financial institutions create and manage value. The framework consists of three important elements. Part of this book is dedicated to each element:

Part I - Value Measurement: How Do We Measure the Value of Banks, Insurance Companies, and Asset Management Companies? First, tailored performance, capital, and valuation frameworks are specifically targeted at banks and insurance companies, and are consistent with shareholders' views on the value creation of financial services companies. This section describes how to measure the value of banks, insurance companies or asset management companies, and recognizes the unique role that risk and capital play in these businesses. It includes specific industry examples to illustrate current practices and issues.

Part 2 - From Measurement to Management: How Does Finance and Risk Help Create Value? The qualitative management decision framework for finance and risk functions, covering the decision-making process and organization, can be composed of CFOs and CROs who wish to move from measurement to management. This section covers the key areas in which CFOs and CROs are responsible, including risk management, asset and liability management, balance sheet and liquidity management, strategy and business planning, and final performance management and incentives. And

Part 3 - Challenge Business: Business Unit Insights. Build strategic operational insights and value enhancement initiatives based on a unique value tree for each business. The businesses involved include commercial banking and retail banking, life and property, casualty (re)insurance and asset management; case studies focused on sales and distribution channel management, customer segmentation and portfolio management, and expense management. They are designed to help chief financial officers and strategy leaders challenge business unit planning and provide business unit CEOs with concrete ideas about business initiatives that can help create more value for the company. My intention was to collaborate with a consulting company to create a case study; I had already contacted a consulting company where I had led risk management.
