Adult Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that helps community members identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Just as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training helps a layperson without medical training, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. After completion of the entire course, each participant will be certified as a Mental Health First Aider. After this training, the Learner will be able to: Identify the prevalence of mental illnesses in the U.S. and their emotional and economic cost. Identify potential warning signs and risk factors of depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. Demonstrate a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect to professional care. Identify resources available to help someone with a mental health problem. Prerequisite: None. Reminder: Lunch will be provided. Registration closes 2 days before the training date.
