Beats Antique - Too Many Zooz // Thriftworks
Celebrating its tenth anniversary with its tenth studio release, the Bay Area's wildly innovative performance dynamo Beats Antique emerges from the studio with a brand new album and stage show to mark the milestone. With legendary sets at some of the most iconic venues and festivals around the world and collaborations with superstars from Les Claypool to Bassnectar, the next chapter in the trio's story takes them back to a mysterious world.
When multi-instrumentalists David Satori and Tommy Cappel and choreographer Zoe Jakes dove into development of the new Beats Antique era, the concept of Shadowbox emerged. Driven by the infinite wonders of the deceptively simple design, the narrative of shadows and light, of darkness and contrast, of reality and surreality propelled the music and vision into new territory.
Capturing the heart of the Beats Antique sound means skirting that divide between the electric and the acoustic. Balkan melodies strung over crashing cymbals and marching band horn lines run smack into contemporary electronic grooves. It might be the drums and brass or the sweeping psychedelic strings that will take you for a ride down the rails of a steampunk circus. It's chaos and cacophony on a very tight leash.
All three members shared production duties to harness the sound they first stumbled upon a decade ago: far east meets wild west. Bringing in sarod master Alam Khan (son of Ali Akbar Khan) Jakes was able to take her study of Indian classical dance from the stage to the studio. Russian singer Tatiana Kalmykova resurrected an ancient folk language to evoke a haunting fairy tale that feels at home in the shadows. Beats Antique also recruited rising stars of brass house TOO MANY ZOOZ for the horn-fueled funk and punk central to their sound.
As always, Tommy Cappel focused his efforts on the beats and bass production, while David Satori assembled an armory of stringed, plucked, and bowed instruments from far-flung lands to adorn the low-end foundation. All samples were created live in the studio—a hallmark of the lush warmth of a Beats Antique record.
The Shadowbox stage show will be teased at Red Rocks and Electric Forest before its full unveiling this fall. Taking the theme of shadow play and expanding the concept forward and backward in time, the core members dove deep, influenced by ancient practices of Indonesian shadow puppetry, falling into the world of wayang kulit, the eons long tradition of storytelling where epic tales unfold into the wee hours of the morning.
Enormous lanterns adorn the stage, casting light upon a maze of curtains where playful new characters dance and fight and rejoice and mourn. Beats Antique is breaking the boundaries of conventional wisdom. Why can't an electronic music performance encompass a range of emotion?
This isn't a nuclear-powered laser light show from the ever-intensifying optical arms race of the EDM industry. This is one of the earliest methods of storytelling brought from the past into the present. "The digital is there to enhance the analog," notes Jakes. "We're here to tell a story," Satori adds.
Bringing an album from the shadows of the studio to the brightly lit stage is what Beats Antique does best. These are storytellers for a digital age—equipped with the newest technology and ancient traditions. This is where the Beats meet the Antique.

Anxiety. What Would it be Like if it Were Gone?
If you found a way to feel free of worry, to feel calmer and more confident, wouldn't you want to find out if it could work for you? Hypnotherapy worked for me and now, as a Certified Hypnotherapist and Mindset Coach, I help others to alleviate and eliminate anxiety from their lives. I didn't think it could happen but it did. You know it can be hard to describe to someone who hasn't felt it. The labels just don't seem to be enough for all the thoughts and feelings that you experience. It stays with you even when there's nothing specifically to worry about. It's just there. Like an engine that never stops… Do some of these describe what you feel?: "I can't stop the negative thoughts in my head." "It feels like a constant background hum." "I'm so tired of the energy drain." "I've tried everything and I'm sick of taking medication." "I want to stop worrying about everything." "How do I let go of being overwhelmed?" "I feel stuck." I was there too. I used to have anxiety. I was depressed as well because after a while of feeling like you have no control, you just give up and want it to end. I had anxiety my whole, before I found a way to be free. I didn't know I had it until I was much older. I grew up thinking there was something wrong with me and there isn't anything wrong with us is there? It's okay to want to feel different than you do now and feel successful, and look forward with excitement and anticipation – instead of fear – isn't it? If you think you've tried everything, or even if you haven't, my goal is for you to experience what it's like to finally be "quiet inside". Anxiety free. I tried many things and Hypnotherapy finally did it for me. My anxiety is gone! Now I help others transform negative thoughts to empowerment thinking and help clients reduce or eliminate anxiety and its resulting side effects. Along with hypnosis, I use a variety of other tools and have, over many yeats of clients, developed a specialized process. If you're serious about feeling different, you can experience change through my approach. After addressing the anxiety using a combination of focus driven hypnotic techniques, I will teach you tools to manage any nervousness that comes up in the future. Getting nervous is a feeling that comes and goes. Still, why feel nervous when you can feel excited anticipation? I focus on your specific needs because anxiety affects people differently and great results come from committed collaboration. That's why I offer, free, an up to 30 minute consultation to ensure your questions are answered and that my approach is right for you. If you're second guessing yourself right now, then just decide that it's possible to change and let's discuss it in the free, no risk consultation. It's just 30 minutes to answer all your questions. Some of my other areas of specialty include: Fears/phobias, PTSD, depression, getting unstuck, improving confidence/self esteem, optimum performance (sports, sex and stage), motivation, weight management, stop smoking, mindset mastery and business coaching, personal leadership, medical hypnosis, pain management, faster illness recovery and past life regression. If you feel you experience anxiety, or know someone who does, then reach out and registet for the free 30 minute consult to discuss any questions you may have and learn more. The Myths and Realities of Business Coaching
Business coaching is growing rapidly in the United States, and the people utilizing the expertise of a business coach are achieving strategic personal and business benefits. They have gained an understanding about what is possible for them and their business through coaching. But there are a lot of people who have several notions regarding coaching, and some of these notions are just myths and not reality. Some of the myths and realities of business coaching are:
I do not need a business coach:
There are a lot of people who feel that there are no problems and they are faring well so they do not need to hire a business coach. While this might be true, but it is important to understand that coaching is not limited to fixing of problems, it is also about the creation of new possibilities and making improvements.
Business coaching is just a disguise for telling people what to do:
In business coaching that is effective; there is focus on the results, which is achieved by using several approaches for pulling out solutions from within the people undergoing coaching. The coach does not tell them what to do.
Business coaches have the answers to every question:
People feel that the coach will have an answer to every question. But in reality effective coaching is just the opposite. Business coaches have the question and they can help you in discovering the answers within yourself.
People who have a problem or poor performance need coaching:
This is another common myth people have about business coaching. In reality the clients of coaching are those who have the potential to make it big but they are not able to realize, or clients who have hit a hurdle in the process of developing their business, and need guidance to overcome the impediment through coaching.
Business coaches just sit around and listen to people:
If you think that coaches just sit and listen to their clients, then you are mistaken. Business coaching is based on asking the right questions at the right time. Well thought out questions can be worth hours of listening. However, listening will only be worthy if it can give the required information for the formulation of right questions.
Business coaching takes a lot of time:
Several business owners feel that a lot of time will be consumed in getting the required results through business coaching, but in reality some of the most effective and successful coaching takes place in brief and sharply focused doses. With good coaching there is a high chance of getting it right in the first attempt and saving time in the future.
Not everyone can afford to have a business coach:
This myth about business coaching being very expensive and only rich people being able to afford it is not true. This might be the case with some business coaches, but not for all. When it comes to prospective coaching clients, the focus should be on the importance of making use of coaching to their own development and growth, and their personal and business goals. After this, a mutually beneficial and satisfactory financial arrangement can be made.
So, if you are planning to double your profits, you need to have a specific goal in mind, because everyone wants to earn more than they invest. In order to ensure profitability, its advisable to appoint a professional business coach who will look at your business with a fresh perspective, and will demand results, and most important of all, congratulate you for your success.

Rapid Industrialization in Emerging Economies Propels Global Power Tools Market
Majorly used in the construction and manufacturing industries, power tools are electronically and mechanically modified tools that help reduce the workload and improve work output. Power tools are commonly used for drilling, screw driving, nailing, sanding, and chiseling, along with a long list of other minor functions. As suggested by the functions of the power tools, the global power tools market will benefit from any drivers that affect the construction industry.
Power Tools Information: http://bit.ly/25aTWW8
The power tools are primarily used in construction and manufacturing industries. The ongoing infrastructure development in emerging economies such as India and China is aiding to the growth of this market. Furthermore, the rising concept of urbanization and modernization is also driving the power tools market. India is one of the emerging nations currently undergoing massive urban development as per their smart cities project. In addition, concept of Do It Yourself (DIY) is also supporting the market and helps them to cater residential sector. Furthermore, the availability power tools over various distribution channels and especially on e-commerce websites easily also supports DIY market. Therefore growing idea of DIY is acting as a driver for the power tools market.
Booming Construction Industry Supports Global Power Tools Market Growth
The four major application segments of the global power tools market are electronics, aerospace, construction, and automobiles. Of these, the construction industry relies heavily on the advancements in technology made in the global power tools market. Optimized power tools allow for a faster rate of construction and infrastructure buildup, therefore accelerating the rate of industrialization of any region. This is especially applicable to the developing economies of today. With countries such as China, India, Ireland, and Brazil showing a fast pace in construction and development, the global power tools market is seen to benefit from the high demand shown by these regions.
In terms of non-major applications, the global power tools market is also driven by the growing do-it-yourself culture across the world. Originally strong in developed nations in Europe and North America, the DIY trend is currently spreading to other parts of the world, prompting an increase in the demand from the global power tools market.
High Maintenance Costs Hinder Global Power Tools Market
The global power tools market is, however, still hampered by the higher maintenance cost that they come with. Not all users are comfortable with the continuous maintenance charges of power tools, and not all power tools can function well in challenging environments. Another factor preventing growth of the global power tools market is the high initial cost of power tools, which compels contractors on low budgets to opt for leasing power tools. This constricts the global power tools market and prevents the realization of a higher growth rate.
Power Tools Market Information: https://is.gd/3FNaWK
With nearly 50% of the global power tools market held by electric power tools in 2014, the segment is expected to continue its dominance as high-torque and weather-resistant electric power tools enter the market. In terms of geography, the global power tools market was dominated by Asia Pacific in 2014, followed by North America. The rate of construction is increasing in Asia Pacific, allowing it to maintain its lead in the global power tools market for the time being. The region benefits heavily through the growth of infrastructure and expansion plans in India and China.
Company profiles of the key players have also been included in the report. The company profiles cover, the overview, key developments, financial overview and business strategy of the players focusing on the power tools market. Charlie Daniels Band
Gold Section Seats are No Longer Available
Charlie Daniels"Few individuals have symbolized the South in popular culture as directly and indelibly as Charlie Daniels." Encyclopedia of Southern Culture
Charlie Daniels is partly Western and partly Southern. His signature "bullrider" hat and belt buckle, his lifestyle on the Twin Pines Ranch (a boyhood dream come true), his love of horses, cowboy lore and the heroes of championship rodeo, Western movies, and Louis L'Amour novels, identify him as a Westerner. The son of a lumberjack and a Southerner by birth, his music - rock, country, bluegrass, blues, gospel - is quintessentially Southern.
In fact, even his bent for all things Western is Southern, because his attire, his lifestyle and his interests are historically emblematic of Southern working class solidarity with the "lone cowboy" individualism of the American West. It hasn't been so much a style of music, but more the values consistently reflected in several styles that has connected Charlie Daniels with millions of fans. For decades, he has steadfastly refused to label his music as anything other than "CDB music," music that is now sung around the fire at 4-H Club and scout camps, helped elect an American President, and been popularized on a variety of radio formats.
Like so many great American success stories, The Charlie Daniels saga begins in rural obscurity. Born in 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina, he was raised on a musical diet that included Pentecostal gospel, local bluegrass bands, and the rhythm & blues and country music emanating respectively from Nashville's 50,000-watt megabroadcasters WLAC and WSM.
He graduated from high school in 1955 and soon enlisted in the rock .n' roll revolution ignited by Mississippian Elvis Aaron Presley. Already skilled on guitar, fiddle and mandolin, Daniels formed a rock .n' roll band and hit the road.
While enroute to California in 1959 the group paused in Texas to record "Jaguar," an instrumental produced by the Bob Johnston, which was picked up for national distribution by Epic. It was also the beginning for a long association with Johnston. The two wrote "It Hurts Me," which became the B side of a 1964 Presley hit. In 1969, at the urging of Johnston, Daniels moved to middle Tennessee to find work as a session guitarist in Nashville.
Among his more notable sessions were the Bob Dylan albums of 1969-70 Nashville Skyline, New Morning, and Self Portrait. Daniels produced the Youngbloods albums of 1969-70 Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind, toured Europe with Leonard Cohen and performed on records with artists as different as Al Kooper and Marty Robbins.
Daniels broke through as a record maker, himself, with 1973's Honey In the Rock and its hit hippie song "Uneasy Rider." His rebel anthems "Long Haired Country Boy" and "The South's Gonna Do It" propelled his 1975 collection Fire On the Mountain to Double Platinum status. Following stints with Capitol and Kama Sutra, Epic Records signed him to its rock roster in New York in 1976. The contract, reportedly worth million, was the largest ever given to a Nashville act up to that time. In the summer of 1979 Daniels rewarded the company's faith by delivering "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," which became a Platinum single, topped both country and pop charts, won a Grammy Award, became an international phenomenon, earned three Country Music Association trophies, became a cornerstone of the Urban Cowboy movie soundtrack and propelled Daniel's Million Mile Reflections album to Triple Platinum sales levels.
The album's title was a reference to a milestone in The Charlie Daniels Band's legendary coast to coast tours. Including two drummers, twin guitars, and a flamenco dancer, the CDB often toured more than 250 days a year and by this time had logged more than a million miles on the road. On the Million Mile Reflections Tour, transported in a convoy of busses and gleaming black tractor-trailer rigs - a show that stopped traffic all over the country - the band now included a full horn section, back-up singers, a troupe of clog dancers and sometimes a gospel choir. By 1981, the Charlie Daniels Band had twice been voted the Academy of Country Music's Touring Band of the Year. Daniels' annual Volunteer Jam concerts, world-famous musical extravaganzas that served as a prototype for many of today's annual day-long music marathons, always featured a variety of current stars and heritage artists and are considered by historians as his most impressive contribution to Southern music. Among the artists "Jam Daddy" has hosted at 16 of these mega musical samplers are Roy Acuff, Don Henley, Tanya Tucker, Amy Grant, Leon Russell, Billy Ray Cyrus, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, James Brown, Duane Eddy, Pat Boone, The Outlaws, Dwight Yoakam, Steppenwolf, Bill Monroe, Exile, The Judds, Orleans, Willie Nelson, the Allman Brothers, Link Wray, Ted Nugent, Billy Joel, the Marshall Tucker Band, Solomon Burke, Little Richard, B. B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eugene Fodor, Woody Herman, and Bobby Jones and the New Life Singers.
"I used to say, .I'm not an outlaw; I'm an outcast,'" says the Grammy Award winning star. "When it gets right down to the nitty gritty, I've just tried to be who I am. I've never followed trends or fads. I couldn't even if I tried. I can't be them; I can't be anybody but me."
When you hear a classic Charlie Daniels Band performance like "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," you hear music that knows no clear genre. Is it a folk tale? A southern boogie? A country fiddle tune? An electric rock anthem? The answer is, "yes" to all of that and more. And the same goes for "In America," "Uneasy Rider," "The South's Gonna Do It," "Long Haired Country Boy," "Still in Saigon," "The Legend of Wooley Swamp," and the rest of a catalog that spans 50 years of record making and represents more than 20 million in sales.
His resume includes recording sessions with artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Flatt & Scruggs, Pete Seeger, Mark O'Connor, Leonard Cohen and Ringo Starr. His songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley and Tammy Wynette. This touring legend has been documented by ABC Newsmagazine 20/20.
In April 1998, top stars and two former Presidents paid tribute to Daniels when he was named the recipient of the Pioneer Award at the Academy of Country Music's annual nationally televised ceremonies.
"In his time he's played everything from rock to jazz, folk to western swing, and honkytonk to award-winning gospel", former President Jimmy Carter said. "In Charlie's own words, .Let there be harmony, let there be fun and 12 notes of music to make us all one.'."
"Charlie's love of music is only surpassed by his love of people, especially the American people," former President Gerald Ford said. "He's traveled this land from coast to coast singing about the things that concern the American people. The Academy of Country Music's Pioneer Award is presented to a supremely talented compassionate and proud American, and a fair to middlin' golfer, too!"
On Saturday night, January 19th, 2008, Charlie's life long dream became a reality. He was inducted as a full-fledged member into the Grand Ole Opry. "It is an honor that I can't begin to articulate, there is no way I can express what it means to me", says Daniels. "And to make it special, I was joined on stage by Russell Palmer, the man who taught me my first guitar chords all those years ago." "I pursued my dream in music and by the goodness of God have been able to have a wonderful career, which has spanned fifty years".
"I have been blessed with Gold, Platinum and Multiplatinum albums, I have appeared many times on network television, even in moving pictures. I have won multiple awards from The Country Music Association, The Academy of Country Music, The Gospel Music Association and even a Grammy. I have even played on the Grand Ole Opry many times. But I was always on the outside looking in. I was always a guest, never a member." "Ain't God good"!!!!!!!!!!
Any conversation with the legendary artist, however, rarely includes any of his accomplishments. He'd rather shine the spotlight on the many causes that are close to his heart. He's always been a staunch supporter of the military, and for the past several years has headlined a special concert at David Lipscomb University benefiting the Yellow Ribbon Program which provides scholarships for veterans. Each year there are surprise guests in addition to the announced line up. Among those who have supported Charlie Daniels for an evening of great music include Luke Bryan, Kellie Pickler, Clint Black, Jason Aldean, Chris Young, Rascal Flatts, Lee Greenwood, Darryl Worley, the Grascals, and actor Gary Sinise.
Charlie also lends his time and talent to numerous other charitable organizations, including the Jason Foundation Golf Classic, an organization that targets teen suicide prevention, and the Galilean Children's Home in Liberty, KY, which provides a home for abused and neglected children. "I've been affiliated with them for a long, long time and it's just a great place," Charlie says of the home founded by Jerry and Sandy Tucker. "They take in babies whose mothers are going to prison. They give kids a good stable Christian home and love them. It's just a wonderful place."
Each year Charlie also hosts The Charlie Daniels Celebrity Golf Classic & Angelus Concert in Hudson, FL, a benefit for The Angelus, a full-time residential facility and day school program for the severely handicapped. Charlie has been a member of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Professional Advisory Board and has been a longtime supporter of the T. J. Martell Foundation and its numerous events aiding cancer research. He's also the headliner every year for the Christmas 4 Kids concert at the Ryman Auditorium, which raises money to provide a happy holiday for needy children.
In 2014, Charlie Daniels with David Corlew and Joe & Mercedez Longever founded The Journey Home Project , a not-for-profit organization, that assists in securing funds to help causes that benefit veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Conscious of the need to assist our nation's veterans, they have set out to partner with organizations that do the most good, with the least overhead. The Journey Home Project is making a difference in the lives of American patriots.
Charlie says of using his celebrity status to aid worthy causes, "I have a very unique opportunity because of being in the music community, you try to give back to some extent. I do feel like people should. We should all do as much as we can."

Destruction and melody, acid wit and bruising vocals-this is the Pack A.D. Singer/guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller have made a sound so gigantic, so fierce and raw and empowering, that it's easy to forget there are just two people behind this brilliant, carefully constructed havoc. Shredding and pounding their way through every song, the Pack A.D. swallows you whole inside their fearless Franken-blend of heavy psychpop/garage-rock. Their lyrics are wild nests, human and complex: darkly funny disclosures about depression; indictments of digital excess; grief-stricken fire bombs; sly crusades against stupidity. The Pack A.D. is also one of Canada's "must-see" bands. Be it a massive stadium or the slightly seedy bar where everybody's shoes stick to the carpet, the Pack A.D. have owned every spotlight and stolen every show they've ever played. Becky and Maya are relentless and riveting, playing with the kind of fuck-off freedom that makes everybody in the room vicarious rock stars, even if it's just for the night.

CHRIS DE BURGH
'A Better World'
Always in tune with global and political issues, Chris de Burgh provides much food for thought in the lyrical content of his new album.
The title alone sets the tone and intent for a collection of songs which, although not exclusively concerned with key issues of the day, certainly holds up a mirror to many of them.
Elsewhere on 'A Better World', meanwhile, Chris has crafted material that addresses many of the themes and topics which have always so richly and uniquely coloured his musical agenda; love, war and adventure, travel, discovery and home-coming, the past, the present – and the future.
Stories, all of them, the songs offer an instant and clear insight into the thinking and imagination of one of popular music's most evocative and accomplished songwriters, whose long and consistent career has so far resulted in sales of 50 million albums and sold out performances in concert halls worldwide.
Musically, 'A Better World' is a familiar de Burgh melting pot of diverse styles, tempos and instrumentation. Ballads sit alongside anthems, solo performances with band or orchestral ensemble pieces. Straight-ahead rock and pop songs are infused with regional flavour, from Caribbean to Celtic. Guitar, bass, drums and keyboards are augmented by pipes, strings and brass. Throughout, Chris's voice is by turns powerfully clear and passionately sensitive.
It all comes together to continue, progress and enhance the unique musical footprint which Chris has created for himself while composing a career-long repertoire of more than 280 songs.
Now and as always, optimism and positivity are primary motivations and focal points for Chris, whatever his subject matter; whether justice, equality, religion, progress, relationships, romance or world peace. These words from 'Homeland' speak volcumes: "There is always hope in the human heart for better days ahead".
His 26th studio album, 'A Better World' is available on September 23, a little over three months after the 30th anniversary, on June 1, 2016, of the release of Chris's hugely successful album 'Into The Light'. It was the album that established him as a true, worldwide superstar. The album sold in excess of 8 million copies and included the iconic single 'The Lady In Red', which reached No.1 in 47 countries and still regularly wins ASCAP awards for being one of the most played songs on the planet.
The campaign for a 'A Better World' will commence with the release of opening single 'Bethlehem', a dynamic rock song reminiscent of the global hit 'Don't Pay The Ferryman', and continue into 2017 and beyond with a world tour that will travel through the UK, Europe and other territories.

The Dear Hunter

In January of 2015, I shared an image with my friends on Instagram of a book ofsheet music. This music, prepared with the help of Brian Adam McCune (whoalso added additional orchestration) was being tracked at Fantasy Studios inBerkeley, CA with the amazing Awesme Orchestra, lead by David Mschler(conductor). The image, at the time, had the title blurred out. Ive never been a fan of talkingsomething up before its finished before I even know if I want people to hear it.There is such a large trend with artists to discuss their future creation at length -to promise the best work of their career; a return to form; etc It seems, moreoften than not, that these promises rarely deliver, and serve more as moralboosters for the artists themselves.I would be lying if I didnt admit that I enjoy the opposite. While I am not anelusive, or mysterious person - I do enjoy the mystery, and elusion and since itseems a rare occurrence that the matter makes good on the mystery - I steep inthat realm for as long as I can.Ive fielded many questions. Ive told many lies. Every inquiry met withdismissal Every What are you guys doing next? met with a Really? Act IVjust came out less than a year ago! Dont I deserve some time off? Some ofmy acidity may have been rooted in some authentic anxiety in all reality, it hadonly been 8 monthsGetting back to the image Here is the original, blurred photo from instagram: And here is the Orchestral Score, untreated:So, with that image, I would like to announce Act V. These two albums, Act IVand V, were written and recorded much in the same time frame- though eachalbum retains its own unique identity, tone, and experience.Act V, however, will be the final rock record in the Act series. This may read asthough I am abandoning the project, one record early - but the truth is simplythat in knowing what Act VI means to the series, and what its story has to say -presenting it in the same form as Acts I-V would be short selling the creativeopportunity it presents. It isnt always easy to find the balance between personal creative fulfillment, andthe fulfillment of our fans/friends - especially when youve spent more than adecade of your life pursuing one path and though my personal path has been,at times, far more tangential than the paths I see so many artists walking - I stillfind myself pushing for new, and exciting ideas It is that same gut instinct thathas lead me through the Acts, the Color Spectrum, Migrant, and Amour &Attrition and as always, I need to trust that instinct. In the foreseeable future, this means to recognize the box that The Dear Hunterhas lived in, and blow the box up. This doesnt mean more than it says. Thisband is not ending I am not quitting This is nothing more than vocalizing thedesire for fresh air after what I believe has been the busiest, and mostobsessive, two years of my life.So - to commemorate this moment in both my, and the bands creative history,we are setting out this September on what I am calling The Final Act TourDoes it sound grim? Possibly Is it? No. This is a celebration of everything thathas brought be to this point a celebration for every person who ever toiledover the meaning of a verse; the placement of an illustration; the name of asong; the point of view the lyrics maintain This tour is for all of you, and wecouldnt be more excited to see you.In addition to the tour, we will also be having Story Time with Casey, and whilethat sounds like the setup for a late night cartoon, its really an opportunity to gettogether, meet face to face, and discuss the larger world that exists in therecords - be it the story or the music. In summation - I need to stress something to you all The single greatestresponsibility I have is my commitment to creativity. The task of remaining trueand authentic is not something I take lightly, and I may have imploded long ago,if not for the incredible and endless support I receive daily from fans, friends, and family I am humbled, and grateful to have you all in my life - and I amincredibly excited for the remainder of this year.Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional will be released this Septemberon Cave & Canary Goods / Equal Vision Records.

Zeds Dead
with Ghastly, Unlike Pluto, Nebbra
The tape reads Biography. Pop it in. Rewind. Press play. A whiskey-voiced narrator starts speaking as the hazy images come into focus."It's 2010. Zeds Dead is about to play one of their first shows in the basement of a dive bar in Toronto. Behind the brick walls and the unfinished ceiling exposed wires hang freely. The air smells of booze, smoke, and sweat. A crowd is lined up outside, flasks hang from their back pockets and cigarettes from their lips. Abandoned drinks rest on the lip of the dj booth while joints get sparked in the corners. The tiny room is packed. Nobody quite knows how to describe the music yet. When Hooks and DC start their set the earth trembles. The air becomes charged and almost sexual. Everyone goes crazy. You feel the music in your bones. Your marrow shakes. You don't know what they will play next but you know it might just change your life. Everybody at those early shows could tell these guys are gonna be big."Fast forward a few scenes. The narrator continues."It's 2013. Zeds Dead is killing it. They've got an enormous catalogue that includes remixes for some of the biggest artists out there, and releases with the most credible labels in the game. They've accumulated hundreds of millions of views online. They play tours of over 70 dates to hundreds of thousands of people. Fans love their shows, critics love their creativity, and heads love their production. They're big. Really big."Rewind again. Further than before."The date's not important. The place is Toronto, Canada. Teenagers Zack Rapp-Rovan and Dylan Mamid are introduced they hit it off immediately over a shared love of classic hip hop, music production, and digging through crates. They join forces and call themselves Mass Productions aka MP Records. Dylan becomes DC and Zack becomes Hooks. They work out of DC's often smoky garage. Critiquing, dissecting and swapping samples. They grow with every tune. They get on a level where their combined sound is unified and strong. MP releases an LP of hip hop instrumentals called Fresh Beets. It's a pivotal moment for the duo."Fast forward a couple chapters."It's 2009 and hip hop is in a coma. Hooks and DC are about to have an epiphany that will change everything. They thirst for something new. They want to make people move to their sounds and not just bob their heads, but to grind, heave, shiver, stomp, and dance to their music. They want to capture the ecstasy and comradery of house, the heart pummelling thrill of Drum and Bass, the beauty of ambient music, and the heaviness of electro all in one sound. They want to push boundaries. To challenge themselves and their listeners to"The movie cuts out. Ribbons of static shimmer across the blackness. Someone has taped over this part. A scene from Pulp Fiction flickers on screen. Butch and Fabienne are sitting on top of a Harley Davidson.FABIENNE: "Who's motorcycle is this?"BUTCH: "Its a chopper, baby."FABIENNE: "Who's chopper is this?"BUTCH: "Zed's."FABIENNE: "Who's Zed?"BUTCH: "Zed's dead, baby, Zed's dead."The screen goes black.

For nearly two decades, the Catskill Mountains hid rock 'n' roll's best kept secret. Then one day, singer and songwriter Arleigh Kincheloe said goodbye to her hometown hideaway and moved to New York City to start the hard soul collective, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds.
"Our music is loud, fun, and it's supposed to make you feel good," she declares. "That's the goal."
In the years since, the group – her brother, Jackson Kincheloe (harmonica), Sasha Brown (guitar), Josh Myers (bass), Phil Rodriguez (trumpet), Brian Graham (saxophones) and Dan Boyden (drums) – teamed with producer Randy Jackson for their debut EP, performed more than 700 shows and made their national TV debut on the Today show. They've released three full-length studio albums, including their most recent studio pass, the acclaimed The Weather Below.
Now, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds will finally appease its flock of devotees by releasing its first live album – Fowl Play. The album was recorded on New Year's Eve before a raucous, sold-out crowd in Fairfield, Connecticut and was the beautiful, accidental result of an original New Year's Eve plan gone awry. After losing their New Year's Eve gig just weeks before the big night, the band made proverbial lemonade, securing an alternate venue at the last moment, packing the house, putting on their biggest party to date and recording it for the world to hear.
Fowl Play captures the unbridled live energy for which Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds has become famous and finds the band rollicking through catalogue favorites past and present. The album also features a brand new song entitled "Frankie" and a deeply soulful, overwhelmingly powerful rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Dr. Feelgood".
"They may be from Brooklyn, but the fiery brass- and gospel-infused funk emanating from Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds is rooted in Memphis soul," writes the LA Times. "Their rhythmic wheelhouse combines big-city grit and down-home sweetness with a little bit of Americana twang."
The band has shared the stage with Gov't Mule, Dr. John, Trombone Shorty, The Avett Brothers, and Galactic and has turned audiences into believers through appearances on the festival circuit at Bonnaroo, Firefly, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Bottle Rock, Forecastle and others.
Ultimately, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds stand poised to shake up rock 'n' roll all around the world. "This all stems back to why I loved performing and singing to begin with," Arleigh leaves off. "I want to make crowds happy and see them smile and dance. Singing brings me so much joy. I hope our music does the same for everyone."

The Kills formed in 2000 when a boy from Andover, England and a girl from Florida, USA met in a South London hotel. "It was like we'd lived parallel lives," Jamie recalls. Both had been to art college, the boy had just left a punk-pop band called Scarfo and the girl wanted to leave a punk-pop band called Discount, and both were disillusioned with the musical scenes they were part of. "We had these bedrooms on different sides of the Atlantic which were full of artworks and films and music that we'd made for no-one to listen to. We had so many things in common. It was at a time that if you spent a lot of time making art and dressing up you got beaten down for being pretentious. Everything was about being down to earth. And we both just felt this relief when we met each other."
Alison was so convinced that this was the creative partner she'd always been searching for that she decamped from Florida to Jamie's flat in South London. Inspired by a mutual obsession with The Velvet Underground, '70s London and New York punk, they formed a duo called The Kills, rejected everything they'd begun to hate about being in a rock band, got themselves signed to Domino Records and made a spectacularly sexy garage-punk album called 'Keep On Your Mean Side' in 2003.
Buoyed by the deserved critical acclaim for this and their incendiary early live shows, but also nonplussed by the fact that they were, once again, in a proper band with a record deal, they made a completely different, yet equally spectacular second album in 2005 called 'No Wow.'
The Kills' most recent album 'Blood Pressures,' was released in 2011 on Domino Records. The album saw Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart deliver their vivid and uniquely gritty post-blues, but with a new level of thoughtfulness and depth not yet explored by the duo. Tinged with wistfulness and vulnerability, 'Blood Pressures' has an enduring sense of intricacy and richness that intensely blends with their ever-compelling songwriting.
Recently, the band have been busy exploring their other passion -- visual arts. Jamie opened "Echo Home," an exhibit of his photographic work at the Morrison Hotel Gallery spaces in New York and Los Angeles Alison's original paintings on paper, canvas and fabric art have been exhibited at group and solo shows in NYC and at Art Basel in Miami.
After two years of festival shows and special guest appearances at arena shows with Queens of The Stone Age, Jack White and The Black Keys, and following on from a third album release from The Dead Weather, Alison's band with White, Jack Lawrence and Dean Fertita, 2016 will see The Kills releasing their fifth album, hitting the road once more, and scaling new creative and commercial heights. A long way from south London!

Grouplove
with Muna, Dilly Dally
After scoring success with their chart topping single "Tongue Tied" and spending over two years on the road supporting their 2011 debut Never Trust A Happy Song, Grouplove took less than a week's break before beginning work on their new album, Spreading Rumours. Where most bands might opt to take more time off, the LA-based quintet found themselves invigorated and inspired by the energy shared with their fans and, perhaps more importantly, with each other whenever they took the stage. "On the first album, we probably only had about 10 shows under our belt, explains drummer Ryan Rabin. "This time, we had over 600 and were playing as well as we could individually and as a group. We wanted to transpose that energy into the studio.""And whatever that intangible is that happens when we get in the studio or on stage, we just become one unit. That's what's special about it," continues bassist Sean Gadd. For two months, the entire band Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Hannah Hooper (vocals, keys), Sean Gadd (bass, vocals), Andrew Wessen (guitar, vocals) and Ryan Rabin (drums) lived together in a Hollywood Hills house, complete with an adjacent studio and its own musical legacy. "It was built in the 60's by [Motown founder] Berry Gordy," relates Zucconi. "The Jackson 5 would come to town and stay there. Diana Ross would stay there. And right up the hill was this old house that the Beatles rented in '64. So it was amazing in a historical context to be in such an artistically rich place."This new living arrangement also allowed them to be both continually creative and highly productive. At any given moment, Gadd might be experimenting with some bass lines in the studio, while Hooper and Zucconi worked on lyrics in the living room, and Wessen sketched out guitar parts on the patio. As with all of Grouplove's recordings, Rabin took the helm as the album's producer. The band would jam all night, working on songs until the sun came up. After sleeping for just a few hours, they'd go straight into the studio to record while the ideas and excitement were still fresh and inspired."I think that's why the songs pop and have that energy," says Wessen. "Because they were recorded with that excitement. We tracked almost everything live and in as few takes as possible, before it became 'take number 400' and the soul was gone. We captured that youthful exuberance and that spontaneity, and it's impossible to do without giving yourself fully to the album like we did.""We woke up every day and lived and breathed the album," recalls Zucconi. "It never ended. The album absolutely consumed us. Even after a day's work in the studio, we would retire into the house and, still, all we could do was talk about the new music." While the chemistry between the band members and even the house itself were conducive to Grouplove's creative output, it was also a source of tension that made its way into the songs. "We're really deep friends, but going straight from two years in tour bus to living together in a single house felt like being trapped sometimes," explains Hooper. "It was liberating and suffocating at the same time. We put ourselves in this situation where we were all stuck together and there really was nowhere else to go. For me, that's why the whole album straddles this line of being really fun but also having a feeling of hectic rebellion."That dichotomy can be found throughout Spreading Rumours in both its lyrics and sound. "Ways To Go" disguises a journey of thoughtful self-discovery - full of questions and doubt - in a sparkly package of synth-based pop. Thematically similar but much darker sonically, opening track "I'm With You" starts the album with slowly building piano arpeggios, evoking an almost melancholic feel before breaking into an eerie soundscape steered by driving rhythms and a melodic bassline. The progressive "Borderlines and Aliens" is a display of the band's musicality and heaviest song to date. The schizophrenic "Shark Attack" takes you on a wildly psychedelic ride, incorporating steel drums into its sunny verses before exploding into an electronic infused chorus. There's a vulnerability displayed in the folk-tinged "Sit Still," a song that the band cites as one of the album's many examples of how the anxiety of living in the house translated directly into a song. And later on, "Raspberry" charges into a soulful groove, combining wavering rhythms and soaring guitar trills in an unabashed nod to the Pixies. The band's own origin is a story of spontaneity, fate, and self-discovery, reflecting many of the album's themes. On a whim, after knowing each other for a matter of days, Zucconi, a struggling musician in New York City, accompanied Hooper - an accomplished painter who remains responsible for all of the band's visual art - to an arts colony on the island of Crete. Drawn to one another by a shared creative spirit, the couple met Angelenos Wessen and Rabin, and Gadd, the band's lone Brit. An impromptu reunion in Los Angeles a year later resulted in recording sessions that became their 2010 self-released EP. Response to the music was overwhelmingly positive completely unexpectedly, the five friends became a band. Released in 2011, Grouplove's full-length debut Never Trust a Happy Song served as a buoyant and beautiful introduction to the world, wound together by irresistible choruses, radiant harmonies, and cheery bits of pop-rock perfection. Buoyed by a trio of singles "Colours," "Itchin' On A Photograph," and the aforementioned "Tongue Tied," Grouplove became a mainstay on Alternative radio. Meanwhile, live in concert, the band was harnessing a growing energy. And as their popularity grew, it paid service to this success by building up a live show that would come to define Grouplove as a band and result in back-to-back, sold-out headlining runs in the U.S. and high profile sets at the biggest music festivals in the world. Spreading Rumours sees Grouplove elevating from a band of friends jangling together music and words without much direction into focused artists making a beautiful album together - standing behind one vision and a sound that is uniquely their own. And, when it came time to determine the album's final track listing, they went back to what inspired the new songs in the first place which songs would convey the spirit and vitality of the band live. "People who come out to our shows expect a certain level of energy; that craziness that we bring in our performances and in our songs," says Zucconi. "You just see the reaction of people coming out and you see how much they need it.""We all need it," he continues. "That's how the five of us are going to feel happiest in our lives. It's survival by song."Grouplove is: Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Hannah Hooper (vocals, keys), Sean Gadd (bass, vocals), Andrew Wessen (guitar, vocals), Ryan Rabin (drums).

Chuck Ragan
with W.T. Newton
Chuck Ragan's bracing new release Till Midnight once again confirms what the iconoclastic singer-songwriter's fans have known all along: that he's a deeply compelling songwriter and an effortlessly charismatic performer, as well as a true believer in music's ability to illuminate and inspire.Till Midnight's ten typically impassioned new Ragan compositions embody the artist's trademark mix of eloquent lyrical insight and catchy, forceful songcraft. The album's formidable blend of head and heart is reflected on such new tunes as "Something May Catch Fire," "Vagabond," "Non Typical," "Bedroll Lullaby" and "Wake With You," on which Ragan applies his distinctively raspy voice and sharp melodic sensibility to vividly expressive tunes that reflect both his early grounding in traditional American music and his deep affinity for rock n' roll."There's a lot of love songs on this one," notes Ragan, whose work has always shown a knack for addressing individual concerns as well as societal ones. "I love to write love songs because it's the most powerful emotion. It's what grounds us to this Earth and makes us want to fight to make the world a better place."I always just try to write from the heart and make the music as genuine as I possibly can," he continues. "By doing that, I'm usually writing about whatever's going on in my life. And when you're living your life by wearing your heart on your sleeve, there's not a lot to hide behind."In a musical life that spans close to three decades, Chuck Ragan has consistently worn his heart on his sleeve, and carved out a musical niche in the process. First with post-hardcore trailblazers Hot Water Music and subsequently on his own, he's built a large and singularly powerful body of work whose honesty, immediacy and warmth have won the loyalty of a fiercely devoted international fan base that's supported him through his various musical incarnations.Till Midnight benefits from sensitive production by multi-instrumentalist and Blind Melon/AWOL Nation member Christopher Thorn, and backup by Ragan's longstanding combo the Camaraderieguitarist/pedal steel player Todd Beene, fiddler Jon Gaunt and bassist Joe Ginsberg, plus new drummer David Hidalgo Jr., of Social Distortion and formerly of Suicidal Tendencies, and son of Los Lobos' David Hidalgoalong with Rami Jaffee of Wallflowers/Foo Fighters fame, Ben Nichols of Lucero, Dave Hause, Jenny O., Chad Price and Jon Snodgrass of Drag the River. To give Till Midnight an appropriately organic, lived-in feel, Ragan gathered the musicians at his home in Northern California for a week of rehearsal, fishing and preproduction, before road-testing the new material in Europe."It was really the first time we all learned and rehearsed the songs as a group and laid everything down together," Ragan explains. "It made a huge difference for everybody to have time to sit and breathe with these songs and let everything develop naturally. There was a feeling that I set out to capture and the guys there were able to help us capture it."Although its birth cycle may have been different, the honesty and urgency that distinguish Till Midnight have been constants in the musical journey that began in Ragan's early years. After playing in numerous bands in the late '80s and early '90s, Ragan teamed with Chris Wollard, Jason Black and George Rebelo, with whom he relocated from Sarasota, FL to Gainesville and formed Hot Water Music. That band quickly emerged as one of the American punk scene's most distinctive and inventive units, winning a reputation as a riveting live act while releasing such well-received studio albums as Fuel for the Hate Game, Forever and Counting, No Division, A Flight and A Crash, Caution and The New What Next, as well as the live discs Live at the Hardback and Live in Chicago and the compilations Finding the Rhythms, Never Ender and Till the Wheels Fall Off.Feeling the urge to stretch out creatively, Ragan ventured into a more acoustic approach with the side project Rumbleseat, which released several singles and the album Rumbleseat Is Dead. After Hot Water Music disbanded in 2005, Ragan enthusiastically embraced his new status as solo troubadour, exploring an expanded palette of acoustic and electric textures on the acclaimed albums Feast or Famine, Gold Country and Covering Ground, as well as the stripped-down live set Los Feliz and a series of limited-edition subscription singles released in 2006 and 2007, and later compiled on CD as The Blueprint Sessions. In 2008, Ragan launched the long-running Revival Tour, a series of collaborative acoustic adventures featuring a diverse assortment of punk, bluegrass and alt-country performers. In addition to Ragan, the Revival Tour, which has visited Britain, Europe, Australia and Scandinavia as well as North America, has featured a broad array of talents, including Anderson Family Bluegrass, Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath, Craig Finn of the Hold Steady, Cory Branan, Ben Kweller, Laura Jane Grace, Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash, Tim Barry, Austin Lucas, Matt Pryor of the Get Up Kids, Jesse Malin, Chris Carrabba, Chris McCaughan, Lucero's Ben Nichols, Dave Hause, Flogging Molly's Matt Hensley and Nathan Maxwell, Joey Cape, Brian Fallon of the Gaslight Anthem, Audra Mae, Emily Barker, Dan Andriano of the Alkaline Trio, along with Jenny O, Kevin Seconds, Frank Turner, Rocky Votolato, Jon Snodgrass, Chad Price and Jenny Owen Youngs. In 2012the same year that Ragan reunited with Hot Water Music to record their album Existerthe veteran road warrior released his first book, The Road Most Traveled, a collection of insights and anecdotes on the touring life that serves as both a personal memoir and a helpful how-to handbook. He is currently working on a second volume. As his book makes clear, and as Till Midnight confirms, Ragan takes his musical mission seriously, drawing inspiration and emotional sustenance from the songwriters and music he surrounds himself with, his family and friends along with the close and loyal relationship with his audience."The way I see it," Ragan observes, "we're faced with tons of inspiration every day. Every step of this life has a way of teaching you something, showing you something, opening your ears and your heart to something. I have all these friends out there, and this community that supports me, who believe in what I'm doing and who believe in the power of music and the power of community."It's a blessing and a privilege to stand on stage and play music for people," he continues. "I meet so many folks out there, and they're so hospitable and so kind and say such nice things to me about the songs. The support and the energy that I get from them is what makes it possible for me to keep doing this. And when I'm there and in that moment, it's important to me to give it back to them as strongly as they're giving it to me."

of Montreal
with Ruby the Rabbitfoot
Innocence Reaches begins with a query. How do you identify? coos a robotic voice over a strikingly modern mix of bright synthpop and surging rave. The question too feels very of its timeas outdated ideas about gender and attraction are being overturnedbut its also a fair ask whenever of Montreal debuts an album. The projects 14th LP follows two full decades of mercurial creative mania: swallowing up 60s psych-pop, Prince-ly funk, and glammy prog in turn; morphing freely between full-band affair and cloistered confessional booth; comprising lyrics both painfully personal and absurdly fantastical; and recently drawing site-specific inspiration from culture capitals like San Francisco or New York City. The thread that runs through it all is Athens, GAs Kevin Barnes, and Innocence Reaches finds him at his most light-hearted in years, working a Parisian stint, Top 40 sounds, and his newfound single status into the kaleidoscopic swirl. Even as he continues to sift the sonic and emotional detritus of his past, Barnes sums up his current mood in the openers title: lets relate. The most immediate surprise is the sound. Innocence Reaches is touched by contemporary electronica, indie pop, and EDM. For the first time in his career, Barnes tuned into now. Forever Ive been detached from current music, he says. I got into this bubble of only being in some other time period. I came up picking apart the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and symphonic pieces. But last year, I was hearing Jack , Chairlift, Arca, and others, thinking about low end and sound collage. It was an extra layer to geek out on.Paris helped with that. Barnes lived in a friends studio for two weeks. It was in an apartment complex and, as he prefers to work at night, he couldnt thrash loud instruments for fear of noise complaints from the neighbors. But the in-house arsenal of vintage synthesizers and drum machines was fair gamecheck the skittering beats of a sport and a pastime and thick hum of chap pilot.By day, Barnes wandered Pre Lachaise Cemetery, sat at cafs and wrote poems, read Jeans Ganet and Cocteau, or eavesdropped on conversations he couldnt translate. Being in that place where no one looks at me twice and I cant even understand the language was like entering a parallel universe, recalls Barnes. It was cathartic and inspiring to amputate myself from my normal life and feel like an individual outside of all the baggage and memories.Enjoying anonymity, he sorted through the inner wreckage left by his divorce two years prior, and took stock of the briefer relationships since. my fair lady bids adieu to a familiar figure over sax-streaked disco-funk, but we soon meet Sarah from Detroit on darkwave dream ambassador bridge, and Gabrielle the Athenian Beach Goth amid the trappy space-glitch of trashed Exes. In les chants de maldoror, our hero cooly declares, We only act nicely when were ruining hotel beds/I greeted you in a hundred doorways. Innocence Reaches continues of Montreals recent autobiographical streak, which finds Barnes fetishizing reality, as he puts it.But hes concerned with a broader reality as well. its different for girls is an exploration of the dilemme fminin. Combining Daft Punks aptitude for groove with LCD Soundsystems witan endlessly quotable track that has Barnes outlining the dangers inherent in binary gendering: Its different for girls, from when they are children theyre de-personalized, aggressively objectified... and later Barnes sings Its different for girls, they are mercurial creatures, not a masculine dissonance or sexual currency. The song is less feminine anthem and more pop exegesis of societal codes. though some women are demons all of them are God. Indeed.Apropos, Innocence Reaches cover design was an attempt by a new first-time fatherKevins brother Davidto express his wonderment for the female anatomy. And the aforementioned lets relate was indeed inspired by trans issues, a subject dear to Barnes heart. I have a history of gender-bending in performances, but thats also always been a part of my identity as a human, he says. Im thankful to have an outlet for that, to express that and not get chased out of town or beat up. I think were moving in the right direction now. The song is a call to find common ground in simply being human: I like that you like you/I think that youre great/I want to relate, he sings cheerily.Innocence Reaches features darker moments to be sureisolation, anger, indifference, and the feeling that, like a Truffaut film, madness lurks just outside the framebut as Barnes explains, Epiphany comes from breakdown. If you can stay open and vulnerable, the nebulous becomes transparent. Thats one of the magical aspects of writing from personal life.Sometimes youve gotta intentionally court a little chaos in order to make one of the best, weirdest, brightest, catchiest, and most inventive albums in your already incredible catalog.

An Evening with Pat Metheny
Sunday, September 25, 2016 @ 7:30 PM
With Antonio Sanchez, Linda Oh & Gwilym Simcock
It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammies for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery) and it's youngest member. Metheny has spent much of his life on tour, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 1970s. He continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.
Metheny was born in Lee's Summit, MO into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, he switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility–a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing and the blues.
With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional "jazz guitar" sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument.
Metheny's versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny's body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre.
As well as being an accomplished musician, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). He has also taught music workshops all over the world, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also has been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar, the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez's PM series jazz guitars, and a variety of other custom instruments.
